Cleaning debris from gutters on an asbestos cement roof

1 Use the right kit
  • Wear Type 5 disposable overalls and disposable gloves
  • Wear the overalls one size too big and put the legs over the top of footwear
  • Do not re-use disposable overalls and gloves
  • This work doesn’t normally need a face mask
  • Asbestos cement roofs are fragile and will not support your weight
2 Keep dust down
  • Mix 8 parts water with 1 part washing up liquid in a garden sprayer or watering can
  • Sprinkle / spray the liquid into the gutter to dampen. Do not make a slurry
  • Remove the debris with a trowel or scraper and put it in a plastic sack
  • Continue to dampen as you work to avoid dry debris
  • Asbestos cement roofs are fragile and will not support your weight
3 Clean up properly
  • Use a damp cloth to clean tools and put the used cloth in the plastic sack
  • Double bag all waste including overalls, gloves and cloths in plastic sacks, seal with tape and label as asbestos waste
  • Contact the local tips in your area to find one that accepts asbestos waste
